NASA's Space Shuttle Program

Enterprise (OV-101):

  • Constructed: 1974
  • Status: Prototype/Test Vehicle
  • Flights: Used primarily for atmospheric tests and glide tests. Never flew into space.
  • Notable Events: Conducted approach and landing tests (ALT program), and later used for various ground-based tests.

Columbia (OV-102):

  • Constructed: 1975
  • Status: Operational Orbiter
  • Flights: 28
  • Maiden Flight: STS-1 (April 12–14, 1981)
  • Final Flight: STS-107 (January 16–February 1, 2003)
  • Notable Events: First shuttle to fly into space. Tragically lost during re-entry on STS-107.

Challenger (OV-099):

  • Constructed: 1978
  • Status: Operational Orbiter
  • Flights: 10
  • Maiden Flight: STS-6 (April 4–9, 1983)
  • Final Flight: STS-51-L (January 28, 1986)
  • Notable Events: Lost during launch on STS-51-L, resulting in the tragic loss of the crew.

Discovery (OV-103):

  • Constructed: 1979
  • Status: Operational Orbiter
  • Flights: 39
  • Maiden Flight: STS-41-D (August 30–September 5, 1984)
  • Final Flight: STS-133 (February 24–March 9, 2011)
  • Notable Events: Flew more missions than any other orbiter. Deployed the Hubble Space Telescope.

Atlantis (OV-104):

  • Constructed: 1985
  • Status: Operational Orbiter
  • Flights: 33
  • Maiden Flight: STS-51-J (October 3–7, 1985)
  • Final Flight: STS-135 (July 8–21, 2011)
  • Notable Events: Last shuttle to fly in space, completed the final mission of the Space Shuttle program.

Endeavour (OV-105):

  • Constructed: 1987
  • Status: Operational Orbiter
  • Flights: 25
  • Maiden Flight: STS-49 (May 7–16, 1992)
  • Final Flight: STS-134 (May 16–June 1, 2011)
  • Notable Events: Constructed as a replacement for Challenger. Flew the first Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission.
